Every runner receives a technical shirt (mens and womens sizes so please give us the correct mens or womens size when you sign up) and a race bag with goodies and of course a finisher’s medal. In addition, every runner will get the opportunity to participate in a first class long distance relay event over a 178 mile spectacular course passng through two states and touring the Reno-Lake Tahoe region, filled with cool places and sights to see, with a lively start ceremony with music and introductions, a Finish Line Festival with delicious food and cold brews for sale and music and an awards ceremony, 35 exchange points, many spirited and informed volunteers, plenty of directional signs, safety signs, light plants, and highway patrolmen for your safety, and hundreds of other enthusiastic runners with creative team names and shirts shuttling about in decorated vans to share the experience with you and add to your memories.
Early registration swag:
The first 40 teams to sign up will receive their choice of an official Reno-Tahoe Odyssey visor or beanie knit cap for each runner. Not everyone on the team needs to pick the same item. For example, 5 may select a beanie and 7 may choose a visor.
Captain’s swag:
Each captain will get an RTO beer glass. In addition, the captain will receive a complementary beer at the Finish Line Festival. One captain per team.
Cap on number of teams:
Two hundred (200). We are not looking to be as big as the Hood To Coast at least not this year. This is another reason to sign up early to make sure your team gets into the event.
Two ways to register:
1) On line through Active.com. Click here to connect to Active.com.
2) By mail. Click here to get the registration mail in form. Please complete it carefully and legibly so we can read it. Write a check to People Burning Fat Productions and mail or deliver it and the completed registration form to the RTO offices in downtown Reno at 331 E. Liberty Street, Reno, Nevada 89502.
Registration requirements:
At the time each team signs up, the team captain must provide the following information to be considered a registered team.
For each runner:
Name
Gender
DOB
City of residence
Email address
Tech shirt size (mens and womens sizes)
10K time
For each team:
Name
Division
Estimated total time to complete the course
To increase the likelihood that you will get the right size of your Race Shirt:
Please note that only runners who are registered as of March 31, 2010 are guaranteed a race shirt in the right size. After that we will try to provide each runner with a shirt that is the right size but we cannot guarantee it. This is another reason to sign up and get us all of your information early.
Volunteer requirement for local teams
Each team that has at least 9 runners residing in communities along the course needs to provide 3 volunteers. Please let us know for each volunteer the following information: (1) Name; (2) email address; (3) telephone number; (4) preference as to when and where the volunteer wants to work.
For teams who have registered by March 31, 2011, we need the above-referenced information by March 31, 2011. For teams who register April 1 or later, we need the information when the team captain registers the team.
Teams who do not provide the required volunteer info will be charged $100 per team and will be required to pay that $100 fee by May 1, 2011. We will use those monies to pay non-profit organizations to help us with our volunteer needs.
Course Change Alert:
The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey course has been the same for the first six years of the event. As the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey field continues to grow, we will need to adjust the course to handle the larger group of runners and support vehicles. One likely change will be eliminating the exchange point in the Rubicon area on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore, adjusting the length of the legs in that area, and adding a new Leg 18 in South Lake Tahoe. In addition, new business and residential development and freeway construction in Carson City will likely impact the course. Lastly, we are leaning toward adjusting the last six legs of the course. We probably will combine the current Legs 31 and 32 into one leg, have the one leg down Geiger Grade, and then plot a new route through the Truckee Meadows over four legs to get to the finish in Idlewild Park. Over the years we received some complaints about the length of the last 3 legs, so we’ll look to shorten them. We will give you as much notice as possible about any course changes. If you have any ideas, please share them with us.
Other Requirements That You Need To Be Aware Of Before You Sign Up For this Event:
Each team member who runs in the event will be officially registered and will sign the release form. The release form is posted on the Runners page of the website. Provide us with the form as soon as possible but no later than when your team checks in at the relay.
Each team shall provide a reasonably accurate projection as to the amount of time it will take to complete the course. If your team roster changes, we need to be aware of your revised projection. It is very important that teams give a realistic projection. We use these times to determine when to staff exchange points with volunteers, and to determine when to assign highway patrolmen to monitor certain sections of the course. Inaccurate projections jeopardize the event: they create safety issues for teams, volunteers, and motorists. Any team who is significantly ahead or behind its projected times at any part of the relay may be subject to certain penalties, such as being directed to drop out of the event, not receiving their medals at the finish, not being listed in the final results, and/or not being allowed to participate in future relays.
Each team must have two vehicles to transport its runners. Vans or sports utility vehicles are preferred. No oversized vehicles such as buses, oversized motor homes and limousines are allowed.
This is a relay that starts one day and runs through the night and finishes the next day. The standard operating procedure for this type and scale of event is that each team supports itself. That means that each team carries enough water and food to get around the course. If you need to stop to re-supply, then please do so. There are plenty of stores along the route. This is not a run where the race management provides water and food along the course. The only exceptions are that we will set up an aid station along Leg 4 because the team support vehicle does not travel that leg with the runner. In addition, we will set up an aid station along Leg 36 if it is continues to be along the Truckee River Path from Cottonwood Park in Sparks to the Harrah’s Auto Museum in Reno. At the finish, we will have water for those Leg 36 runners who could use or desperately need a quick drink of water to refresh themselves. There will be fine food and drinks for sale at the Finish Line Festival so have some money available so that you can partake in those goodies. Or continue to enjoy the bounty that you already have in your support vehicles. But please no glass battles in the park.
Be prepared for a grand adventure. Bring your best attitude. And have a blast.
