Comstock Odyssey: Course Overview

The Comstock Odyssey highlights the exciting final miles of the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey course: combining historic Virginia City character, high desert vistas, and the rewarding descent toward Reno. Though shorter in distance, this segment still offers a meaningful physical and mental challenge within a fair and well-designed course structure.

The course begins in Virginia City at Exchange Point 30 and finishes in Reno at the J Resort Festival Grounds, where teams join the full relay celebration at the Finish Line Festival.

Teams travel this final stretch in a counter-clockwise direction, taking in the dramatic scenery and strong finish energy that define the Reno-Tahoe region running experience.

Relay Leg Assignments

See the table below for mileage and difficulty ratings for each leg. We encourage teams to review the individual leg maps as well to better understand terrain, elevation, and course conditions.

  • E – Easy (relatively flat, distance varies)
  • M – Moderate (rolling terrain, distance varies)
  • MC – More challenging
  • MD – Most Difficult (includes some of the steepest climbs — and no, not “MD” for call a doctor)

Each runner slot corresponds to one leg of the course (Legs 31–36). Teams can assign runners to these legs however they choose based on their team size and runner strengths.Leg 31 begins in Virginia City and is one of the shorter legs of the course but is rated Most Difficult (MD) due to steep climbs and terrain.

Example:

  • Leg 31 begins in Virginia City and is one of the shorter legs of the course but is rated Most Difficult (MD) due to steep climbs and terrain.
  • Leg 33 is the longest and one of the more challenging legs in this segment at 6.6 miles, rated More Challenging (MC).
  • Legs 34–36 feature longer distances but more moderate terrain as runners make their way toward the finish in Reno.

When assigning legs, consider both distance and difficulty ratings. Some shorter legs include significant elevation gain, while some longer legs are more moderate. Strategic leg assignments can help your team finish strong at the Finish Line Festival in Reno.
